In this section, students will be introduced to the concept of לא בשמים היא, along with competing contemporary interpretations of this theory provided by Rabbi Eliezer Berkovitz and Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks. As a whole, this unit explores the extent of human authority and responsibility in the halakhic process, while also investigating the nature of truth and the process by which law is decided within Halakha. Key concepts include majority rule, objectivity and subjectivity in Halakha, whether Halakha is human or divine, and change within Jewish law. These foundational concepts and questions will be revisited throughout the curriculum.
